| Plunging Oil Prices Lifts China's Markets |
| on 24-Jul-2008 16:26 |
| Thanks to the continued retreat of oil prices and the gains of Wall Street overnight, Chinese shares ended a two-session losing streak and posted strong gains on Thursday. The Shanghai Composite Index gained 72.44 points, or 2.55% to close at 2,910.29. The Shenzhen Component Index returned to the 10,000 point level. It advanced 271.27 points, or 2.79% to close at 10,005.99. Combined turnover of the two markets climbed to over RMB 114 bln, a near 20% increase. Fewer than 50 stocks posted losses on the two markets at the closing bell. As international oil prices extended their decline, dipping below USD 125 per barrel, and saw their lowest close since 4 June, Sinopec, Asia's top refiner, had gained nearly 3% by closing. Other heavyweights also rose sharply in the session. China Life, Ping An Insurance and China Pacific Insurance, the country's top three insurers, closed over 4% higher. The real estate sector also led the market rally, with nearly 10 stocks in this sector closing 10% higher, which is the maximum intraday trading limit of Chinese markets.
